As of 5 January 2014 all campaigining has to be stopped to ensure that people are not influenced in anyway on which to vote (Like that’s going to happen, LOL). Although Mahinda has used every dirty trick in the book shoving the whole look how much good I’ve done down peoples throats, even though I have stolen billions of dollars and caused inflation to double method has been very effective. He may not be a very good administrator, but he really knows how to market himself (When he looses the election, that’s a career option he should consider, he has a flair for it). He really rallied up his troops until the fateful Salman Khan Celebrity promotion campaign. Yes, I’ve seen most of his campaign ads and material, they are horrible but it attracted the target demographic area, hence served the purpose. Bringing down Salman Khan was the tipping point for most the Mahinda supporters who were skeptical and were supporting him knowing all damning evidence of him blatantly misusing authority authority. The Salman Khan campaign really tipped the scale in favour of Maithree, especially after Namal tried to act like Salman Khan did the whole charity act and promote Mahinda out of free will, I mean how stupid does he think we really are???
Looking at it from an economical point of view Mahinda’s campaign is a huge waste of money, I mean if you are confident of winning and have nothing to fear why spend so much tax payer money and public servants on campaigning and re-introducing yourself to the country? If you are really as good as you say you are then your actions should speak for you rather than you force it down everyone's throat using every possible method available.
Given all this negativity towards Mahinda I don’t endorse Maithree either; this is a very common opinion amongst a lot of people. Whatever said and done Maithree did betray his leader and isn’t even close to the sort of leader Sri Lanka really needs to take it in to the next era. He based his entire campaign on demolishing the executive presidency, mistake number 1. For the people who understand the gravity of this move it makes a lot of sense and is a very good issue to base the whole campaign around, but to for the rural (which is the majority of votes) population this has no real impact and isn’t an issue to which you can gather voters around you. What the rural voters expect is some sort of relief to help ease the burden of their cost of living and boost their businesses to maximize their revenue.
Mistake number 2, most of the campaign was a mud slinging competition where both sides (Including the common candidate, Maithree, yes, like it or not he was slinging mud at the government left, right, center and any other direction possible) competed on who could cause the most dramatic effect of disdain amongst the voters to pursuade them to vote for their party. This is Sri Lankan politics in a nutshell I know, but if the new government we are electing is using the same playbook the old government uses whats the point of having a new government at all?
Mistake number 3….accepting defectors from other parties (Especially from the UPFA). Aren’t we just bringing the same goons in the government right now in to power again under a new symbol? Maithree is the common candidate yes I know that…common, backed by many parties, but wouldn’t you want fresh faces in the government who will take some time to learn how to learn the art of swindling money from the government from scratch, hence we won’t be swindled majorly for at least a couple of years? Years is very optimistic, it’s more like months, but anything is better than how the current government is robbing the country blind right now, honestly.
Everybody is a political guru these days (Including me, hehe) so there's plenty of opinions to read on this topic, the common consensus right now which I agree with is this; As members of society we have an obligation to vote, it is mandatory that each of us uses the power vested in us by the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to ensure that the we participate in the Presidential election to influence the future our country by voting. Mahinda and Maithree are both idiots, I said it, I said it, all of us are thinking this anyway so don’t shoot the messenger, don’t hate the player, hate the game, but Maithree is the lesser evil amongst the options available. Since Maithree is a common candidate the decision making power will be somewhat distributed amongst all the supporting parties, favoritism and monopolization shown towards certain companies will be reduced (slightly again, but the slightly could still make a difference of millions right now based on how high the cost of development is and how money just goes missing).
No matter buffoon Ranil looks like he is actually a really smart guy; he’s well read and is the best person in politics we have to offer to help mend the foreign ties which Mahinda has frayed to serve his own ploys. Sri Lanka maybe small in size but has a vast amount of potential which it cannot retain. To keep talent in the country the government needs build an environment which can sustain these great minds and establish Sri Lanka as a power player within Asia, Ranil has the business sense to make this happen.
On the 8th of January let’s all go and vote for Maithree to end this tyrannical reign of the Rajapaksa family once and for all and hope we still are in time to stop this country from it descending to become the next banana republic.
